Nayi Disha - Teaching with the Kinect to Progress Past Literacy Related ObstaclesPublished by admin on Thu, 01/12/2011 - 5:12pm
As the video illustrates, close to 500,000,000 people in India do not have access to the resources necessary to learn how to read and write. Many attempts have been made to introduce technology to these less fortunate people, but there is still a huge barrier that exists between using a computer properly and not knowing how to read.
With Nayi Disha -- translates to "A new Direction" -- the aim is to provide a Natural User Interface that eliminates the requirement to read instructions in order to accomplish goals or tasks on a PC. The user simply points to what they want to access and can interact directly with images and objects on the screen.
The superiority of interactive learning over non-interactive one has already been established several times. Video conferencing does seem to be a more intuitive option. However, in a place like India, where bandwidth is still probably as precious as oil, it often leads to a substandard experience.
Nayi Disha requires the Kinect SDK to be installed and can be downloaded here
